Superior Gymnastics

What it is:  Superior Gymnastics offers gymnastics and dance classes and camps for kids from ages 1 to 13.  They have parent/child classes for younger kids (under 3) and individual classes for older kids (above 3).

What we like: The classes are offered mainly in one very large room with a ton of gymnastics equipment (e.g. balance beams, trampolines, mats and parallel bars).  Another room has a large foam pit which is typically a big hit and where the classes usually end.  There are two nice rooms outside of where the classes are held.  One room contains large windows and chairs for parents to sit and watch their kids.  Another room contains toys, books and tables for younger siblings to entertain themselves while waiting for older siblings.

My 3 year old son just recently started taking the 'Twisters' class for 3 to 4 year olds.  They usually limit the class size to 3 or 4 kids per instructor which is really nice.   Kids are able to experiment on all of the equipment through circuits.  The prices are also a lot lower than some of the other gymnastics places in the area ($49-59 per month for toddlers) and you can sign up on a month to month basis.
What we would change:  There are usually a few classes going on at the same time which can make it a little chaotic even though the space where classes are held is large.  It may be due to summer months but it seems that the instructors and people in the class change often.  The classes also don't seem very structured and seem more like free play with circuits but we have only taken a few classes so it may be too soon to tell this.

Top Five Restaurants (with areas for kids to play)

In our most recent poll, we have asked our readers about your favorite area restaurant, but not just any restaurant.  We asked you what your favorite restaurant was where your kids could play.  There was a clear winner and several other great options for eating options with a little something for the kids.  Check out how everyone voted.

1. Your favorite restaurant with a kids' area was Chick-Fil-A, capturing 36% of the vote.  At Chick-Fil-A they do so much to make families with kids feel welcome.  At the location off of Renaissance Parkway near Southpoint Mall they have a kids' night where your kids can eat free and do a craft, a play area where kids can climb and play, the mom valet kids service where they will set up your table when you drive through, and customer service that always takes care of families with kids.

2. Second place with 18% of your vote was Nantucket Grill.  Their location at Sutton Station off of Fayetteville Road is a great place to take your kids because of their outdoor seating.  You can sit outside and enjoy your meal, and when your kids get fidgety they can play in the large grassy area or near the fountain.  On certain summer nights everyone can also listen to live music!

3. Pops Backdoor South and Blue Corn Cafe tied for third place with 10% of the vote each.  Both of these places pair delicious food and a casual atmosphere with a separate play place for the kids.  You can sit at your table and enjoy your food while your kids head over to the play areas to get their wiggles out.  As an added bonus, you can see the play area from your table!

5. The newest restaurant in our top five is Bull City Burger and Brewery placing fifth with eight percent of the vote.  Bull City has great burgers as well as a great beer and wine selection for the adults.  You can enjoy all of these benefits and your kids can go back to the play area to draw or play while you relax.

Thanks to all of these Durham establishments for making it easier to enjoy a night out with our kids.  For our readers, thank you for voting and keep checking out the blog to vote on our next poll coming soon.

Frankie's Fun Park

What it is: Frankie's Fun Park is a great indoor and outdoor park.  They have many outdoor activities including go-karts, min-golf, batting cages and rides.  The indoor activities include a giant arcade and indoor playground, rides, laser tag and restaurants.

What we liked:  With our 3 year old son we enjoyed roller ball in the arcade (like bowling but with a small ball) and a mini-basketball game just right for his size.  We also enjoyed the bumper boats outside but you must be 38 inches to ride them as a passenger.  There was plenty to do for all ages but it is geared more toward kids 3 or 4 years old and up.    They have a great card system set up where you can load money on a card and pay for everything that way, including food.  It makes it a lot easier than tokens.  Since the area is so large it didn't feel crowded even on a weekend.

What we would change:  It was a little hot for the outdoor activities and most of the indoor and outdoor activities are geared more toward older kids including the indoor playground.  It would be nice if they had a few activities for the younger ones.
