Last week, our group of mommy friends were in serious need of a night out. We'd had enough PB&J's and half-conversations yelled across a playground. We were in need of a moment where we could feel like adults back out in the real world. So, we left the dads at home with the kids and headed out to downtown Durham!
What it is: This time we headed to a new tapas restaurant located on West Chapel Hill St. called Mateo. We had heard that this new spot was already crowded so we got reservations and walked right in to our seats. They had a great wine list and we picked some of their sangria to sip while we dined. Their menu was great-authentic Spanish-style tapas. We picked out 5 tapas-which are small plates-to split among the three of us. We tried the patatas bravas, tortilla espanola, calamari, and more and they were all delicious. We had to order two more plates before all was said and done. Oh, but I guess we weren't done because they had a fantastic dessert menu, and we loved the bread pudding and churros with chocolate sauce. We talked and ate and drank for hours, and it was a wonderful atmosphere. We can't wait to head back...maybe next time we'll take our husbands!
What we liked: The menu and food were great. We thought with all of those plates that we ordered that our bill would be completely unreasonable, but I was amazed when I looked at the bill. Since each of the plates was a tapas-style plate, our bill was actually an affordable girls' night out.
What we would change: There's not much we would change about this place. It's location is not near any obvious parking, so you might have to hunt a little for a parking lot, but one of us was able to find a lot just behind the restaurant that worked great!
