Hummingbird Bakery is located right across Broad St. from Duke's East Campus sharing a building with the ADF (American Dance Festival). We headed over one morning intending to get a sweet treat for our little ones. We walked in and there were plenty to choose from. While we were taking our sweet time (ha) to make our decision, the lady behind the counter was nice enough to give our little ones a homemade marshmallow on a stick for them to munch while we decided. My son munched it in one delicious bite.
By the time they had finished munching on their marshmallows, we had decided on the red velvet cupcake and the blueberry cupcake filled with lemon curd for the kids-yum! Oh, and they had also talked the adults into a splitting a pimento cheese sandwich for lunch.
All was completely delicious, and splitting the sandwich was plenty for a fantastic reasonable lunch. Plus, they have a great bar with tall stools that are actually fairly safe for toddlers with armrests and backs to keep them contained. We could put our toddlers in the seats at the bar where they can look out a large window facing Broad St. and Duke's Campus. We actually had a relatively peaceful meal/snacktime because the kids loved watching the cars go by and the dogs playing in the fields at Duke.
What we liked: The food was delicious, and when we went at about 11am on a weekday, the place was fairly empty so we had the bar table to ourselves.
What we would change: There wasn't much seating indoors, so I bet it can get pretty crowded on the weekends. However, they do have lovely outdoor seating that you can take advantage of as well.
