Crabtree Valley Mall Play Area-Renovated

*Thanks to one of our wonderful readers for letting us know that the play area at Crabtree Valley Mall had been renovated.  While it took us a little while, we finally headed over to check it out.

What it is: Crabtree Valley Mall has always been a fun place to take the kiddos, but their play area has always been a little lacking.  While it's still a small area, it was a nice relaxing break for us from the chaos of the mall.  The play area is basically a smaller version of the play area at Southpoint Mall in Durham.  They have several large soft plastic sculptures to play on including a large tree slide in the middle of the area.  There are also several fun activities on the wall for the kiddos as well comfy benches for the parents with shoe cubbies underneath.  I was honestly surprised to see how well just these few diversions held the kids' interest for a long time. There are also quite a few paid ride-on vehicles outside this play area. However, my kids are usually perfectly happy to sit and pretend to ride without paying multiple quarters in to every machine.

What we liked: We love the new slide in the play area. It is a nice place to take a break, and when we were there it was pretty empty.  Plus, there is a lot more to see outside the play area at the mall.  After our play time we stopped by the Lego store to marvel at some of the creations inside.  While we were there I also noticed a kiosk where you could make your own Lego man from bins of parts at a cost of 3 figures for $9.  That would be a fun, inexpensive way to enjoy the store.

What we would change: Of course we would like the play area to be bigger.  If you're expecting as much to do as Southpoint, you'll be disappointed.  In addition, it's a bit far from parts of Durham and has especially bad traffic on the surrounding streets at certain times of day.
