Doyle's Vineyards

Last weekend my kids and I made it out to Doyle's Vineyards, just a quick ride from Southpoint. This was previously a vineyard, but the new owners have taken in a new direction by adding outdoor movie nights.

We arrived roughly an hour before the start and were pleased to see it wasn't too crowded and there was ample parking. (Look for the blow up wavy guy!) Lots of lovely majestic trees are all over the land, right behind the vines that are adjacent to the road. We set up our seats in front of the inflatable screen and went to look around. A musician was playing some great tunes and the atmosphere was simply relaxing and fun. The kids immediately made friends and ran around the wide open space, darting behind the giant trees and running through the open rolling lawns. I met one of the owners at their dessert truck. They offer popcorn, cheesecake, eclairs and more, but no big meals so you should have dinner first. If you want wine, you have to go down the hill to the house, so we took a stroll. First we sat on a porch swing overlooking a lovely lake which had a beautiful deck next to it. You can see why they offer to host weddings at this vineyard! Then we went inside and it was very homey but also nice, with stonework and wood. I took a peak in the tasting room and what they call the The kids of course loved this because it looked like a secret passageway to a hidden room! I sampled several wines before deciding on one, and we headed back up the hill. On the way, we stopped at the fun dinosaur sculpture for photos!

It was almost time for the movie to start now that the sun was setting so we put on our bug spray (important!) and grabbed popcorn. My kids are E.T. fans and that was the movie of the night. Everyone settled in and enjoyed seeing it on the big screen, with the sounds of a southern night around us. My kids were definitely tired at the end, as it ended nearly at 10, but it was well worth it for a memorable and relaxing evening. We will definitely be back to this hidden treasure! You can see why their tagline is "Come as a stranger...leave as a friend.."

What we liked:
It's a really short drive from where we live in Southern Durham, and after spending all the work week racing around, it was refreshing not to have to load back in the car to go downtown for entertainment. Also it was FREE! And family events are hard to find, especially unique options. Of course, you don't have to have kids to see these films, it'd be a nice date nice or outing with pals. (Especially true of some of the films, like Dirty Dancing which wouldn't be age appropriate for many kiddos! But wouldn't it be nice to have a Mom-Daughter night with a pre-teen, watching Breakfast Club?)

What we would change:
I was a bit hungry, so I would like to see more food options. Also a variety of vineyards instead of just one, RagApple Lassie from Yadkin Valley, would offer more choice until they're able to make their own.
