Carolina Glazed Donuts

SoDu Parents Posse member and local tutoring legend Celia Benton brings us her review of the brand new donut shop in RTP, Carolina Glazed Donuts!

Carolina Glazed Donuts is a brand new donut shop here in Durham, where we have many delicious donut options. So this pregnant mama stopped by the other day with her littles to check them out. The shop is clean and open with a large display case and booth type seating around the edges. They have both yeast and cake donuts with a majority being yeast. The flavors are all pretty normal, nothing wild and crazy like at some other places. You can get a basic donut with several different frosting choices, or glazed donuts in a variety of shapes/styles.

The coolest part was the filled donuts. They have both round donuts and eclair shapes that are pre-glazed or frosted but not yet filled. You can choose a donut with the shape and frosting you like and then choose a filling and they will fill it for you right then. So many possible combinations. On the day we went they had strawberry or raspberry jam, lemon curd, vanilla cream or cream cheese filling. We tried cream cheese, lemon and strawberry and were quite delighted with the results. Also notable is that the bear claw is filled with a delicious apple cinnamon filling, not available in the filling machines because it's chunky.

We choose to get a dozen donuts to go and the whole family was pleased with that decision but it also occurred to me that this would be a fun stop on the way home from Defy Gravity, or with all the delicious smelling lunch options nearby could be a great after lunch treat for a family or anyone in RTP on a lunch break.

What we liked: Seeing them fill our donuts individually was a new experience. The price is great compared to the fancier donut places we often choose ($11 for an assorted dozen). The day old donuts are still tasting delicious, though won't last much longer. We're also excited to note that they're open into the evening for all those late afternoon donut cravings.

What we would change: Not something they can actually change but the way their parking lot is arranged relative to the nearby intersection (lots of right turn only type issues) could be problematic depending on your route and aversion to u-turns. Also, my six year old found that the donuts to be "tasty but not much flavor" so they could be great for some and a let down for others, depending on your flavor preferences.

Good tasting jelly-filled classic doughnuts sound good to me. I must definitely check out this new doughnut shop. I’m also intrigued to see doughnuts being filled right in front of me. Classic donuts remind me of my happy childhood days. A trip to the doughnut shop was always a treat for me then.
