Smashburger

At long last, here is my report about Durham's newest burger restaurant.  Smashburger invited us over and gave us some food so we could check in out and see what we thought.   Read through to the end to find out who won our fabulous Smashburger giveaway!

What it is: Smashburger is the latest location of a national burger chain that just opened in the Lakeview Pavilion East shopping center across from Duke hospital on Erwin Rd. It's right next door to Another Broken Egg Cafe which we checked out a few months ago, and last week we stopped by to check out Smashburger.

When we first pulled up we weren't sure if we would find parking.  At dinnertime, that parking lot was pretty packed and there were people circling trying to find spots.  Fortunately, we found one, but if we hadn't, apparently you can use the next door garage for additional parking (good to know).  We headed in where you order your food at the counter.  My husband sampled their burger while I tried their chicken sandwich.  Apparently, the way their menu works is that you can get each of the menu options in burger, chicken sandwich, or black bean burger form.   That gives a lot of options, which is nice.  I also got their famous garlic seasoned Smashfries as my side while my husband tried their haystack onion rings. They also have tasty salads.  My kids tried the kids' burger and kids' hot dog which came with fries and a drink (for $4.99).  It was nice that they included milk and chocolate milk in the drink options.

We were given a number and sat down.  Our food was delivered to our table very quickly.  The service was wonderful, and the food was tasty as well.  One of my sons asked the person who came to our table why the restaurant was called Smashburger, and he went in to the back and brought out their special tool that they use to "smash" the burgers on the grill to grill both sides of the meat.  We also sampled their delicious Haagen Dazs milkshakes which were delicious!

What we liked:  The service was quick and friendly and the food was tasty.  It's a great option if need a place for a quick kid friendly dinner near Duke.  I also really liked how they had the burgers as their name suggests but they also had the healthier chicken and black bean burger options.

What we would change: There's not much we would change about this stop.  Parking could be a bit tricky, but with the nearby garage option, there is always close, accessible parking.  The kids' hot dog bun was a bit big for my son to get around, but that could have been a personal issue.  It was tasty though.
